Blackwood Station is a musical ensemble from Richmond, VA exploring the boundaries of folk, psychedelia, and rock n roll. Ian Blackwood is the main creative force of the group which began in late 2021 and continues to find its place as an experimental roots rock outfit determined to explore a broad scope of sounds from across the tradition of American music.
Their self-titled debut album, a nod to folk-rock singer songwriters of the 70s, was released November 2023. Their second release, a psychedelic rock journey inspired by the whimsy of 60s psychedelia, is due out in 2024. The lead single, Morning Light, along with the b-side only track, Space Cat, was released Oct. 4 2024.
Ian grew up playing music in the Finger Lakes region of New York. After moving to Richmond in 2014 he began playing mandolin and fiddle in the local alt-country scene and currently performs with Woody Woodworth & The Piners and Dogwood Brothers.
“The acoustic guitar does a nice job of rolling along and keeping the melody rolling. There are shades of James Taylor and other mid-20th century singer songwriters in this sound. The sincerity in the bluesy connotations of the song make it easy for listeners to connect.”
-Greg Jones, Eartothegroundmusic, 2023 Song Of The Year List, #10-1
“The laid back self-titled debut album by Richmond based folk group Blackwood Station scratches every folk itch; steel guitars, heartfelt lyrics sung by a homey voice, and just the right amount of experimentation thrown in for a bit of variety.”
